BBC World Short-Wave Radio Station Ends Its Broadcasting Service in Asia Region

According to Mr. Takorn Tantasith, Secretary-General of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC Secretary-General), the ending of broadcasting service of BBC World Short-Wave Radio Station in Nakhon Sawan Province concerns the Office of National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (Office of the NBTC) as follows:

  1. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs had submitted a letter to Office of the NBTC to consult on whether or not prior approval from Office of the NBTC is required for BBC to extend its contract term with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  2. Office of the NBTC had already notified the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the resolution of NBC Meeting which stated that the establishment of contract agreement for such broadcasting service is part of national agenda and concerns international laws. If the negotiation can be settled, Office of the NBTC is willing to support BBC by granting permission to continue the broadcasting service.

When considered the clarifications made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it can be inferred that the ending of broadcasting service of BBC World Short-Wave Radio Station in Nakhon Sawan Province is likely due to the delay in negotiation process which prevents BBC from extending its contract before the ending of contract term. Nevertheless, ONBCT is willing to allow BBC World to continue its broadcasting service if BBC and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs manage to settle another contract agreement.
